It’s so, so hot out here in the #swampland. Running is the last thing on my mind. Well, not the last — I want to want to do it. I know I need to do it. But the heat is zapping my energy, and my energy is already flagging from all the things on my to-do list. Once again, Runner’s World offers up tips to keep going. An easy three miles on the treadmill is now at the top of the to-do list. I can even do it while the kids are watching Chipwrecked.
Last week, I hit 7.17 miles on the trail. It was an excellent run. Two days later, I did my recovery run of 3 miles. Another excellent run.
I daydreamed about doing a half-marathon in September. It would be my first.
But when I tried to recreate the magic this week, the effect was far from excellent. Six miles in and I hit the wall. I was slow. I had a side-ache by mile 3. My left knee hurt.
I daydreamed about quitting and taking a cab home.
Turns out, I’m not alone. Runners World to the rescue, with an article on how to fight that wall effect in training. The power of positive thinking, hydration and generally being kind to your running body.
I’ll be back at it again this week. Fingers crossed.
A mouse that runs all the time is smarter than one that doesn’t. Probably true for people, too.
Imagine running twice as far as you do now. Mission impossible? It’s easier than you think. And there’s good reason to try. Adding more miles can boost your stamina, help manage weight, and help you get more comfortable on the road. Here’s how.
Shoot For Three
A three-day running week is…
I could run forever in the dappled
light of an Autumn early evening.
Not running makes me grouchy. So thanks to a groin pull (man, I’m a crappy tennis player), I was sidelined from running for a month. Grouch on. And it happened in a month that saw lots of diabetes drama surrounding our daughter, the death of our beloved kitty, and new and crazier schedules for all. Today I hit the trail with my new iphone armband and a happy music shuffle that ended with this Jens Lekman tune that should be on everyone’s playlist – and with one of the best lines in a song: “Your father’s emailing me all the time/ he just wants to say hi/ I send back out-of-office auto-replies.”
Running is good for the soul, for easing the stresses of life that can bog you down in a million different ways. Here’s to hitting the trail more often and leaving the worries behind for a while.

Out-of-town hubby means little opportunity to get outdoors for a run. But after 5-plus hours of walking at the zoo with the kids, who needs one? (And, for the record, the National Zoo may be free, but the Maryland Zoo rocked: http://www.marylandzoo.org/)
